To help getting memtest recognising more chipsets i made this thread, so that people could leave a cpu-z dump everytime they found a chipset that memtest wasn't detecting. Original Thread by Sven Bent.

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: [Linux] HOWTO: Boot Memtest on USB Drive

A simple primer on how to get Memtest86+ to boot from a USB Drive or Hard Drive (without having to install an entire distro or DOS). note: drive used here is a usb drive located on /dev/sda, so make changes accordingly (eg a hard drive install would use /dev/hdc instead) First Step - format the drive optional, only suggested if you're drive needs a good cleaning (this may take a long time given the size of the drive) dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda Second Step - create FAT partitions...

Read the very first post on this forum and the very last post describes my issue. I downloaded the the zip for windows and unpacked the zip. 14. Memtest86 v4.00: fails test case #6; error bits 04000000

Hi: I ran a memory test and failed test case 6 - moving inversion. The error bits are 04000000. The test case generates an error at every memory address. It is not very possible that my memory has a problem at EVERY address. Therefore, I'm suspecting there's some systematic error that affects every memory inversion operation. I guess maybe there's a problem with my mother board or bios? But I don't know how to proceed from here. Please let me know what you think and what I may want to...

  15. MemTest crashes on MacBook Pro

Hi, It was recommended by a support person at VMWare that I might have memory issues that causes the VM to crash the Mac at random times.. Memory was installed by Certified Apple vendor at purchase. I downloaded the memtest86+-4.20.iso.zip and created a boot disk.. Upon booting to that disk it comes up, starts to test and then crashes.. with "Unexpected Interrupt - Halting" Hardware Overview: Model Name: MacBook Pro Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2

  17. Please, How do I interpret the memtest86+ results?!?!?!

I ran memtest last night. I have six modules DDR3 X 2GB each. It gave results which confound me totally! It gave memory slots numbered from 0 to 15 and said that errors were found in modules 1,3, and 5. It also said that the lowest memory failure was at 2425.2 MB and the highest at 9204.2 MB. None of these mean ANYTHING to me in trying to find WHICH of the modules is not working correctly - for possible RMA. Thanks.

  18. No luck with memtest 4.20 on new system

I am using a new (to me) motherboard and not getting any love from MemTest: Supermicro X9SCL-F-O (Chipset Intel C202 PCH chipset) Ram: Samsung DDR3 - M391B1G73BH0-CH9 Samsung DDR3 - M391B5273CH0-CH9 Is it the motherboard chipset or the ram that isn't supported? I get a blue screen with just memtest in the upper left... And I just donated $40 via paypal to the memtest86+ project because I love you!

  21. Why are Memtest86+ updates required for new microarchitectures (ex: Sandy Bridge)?

I was hoping someone could explain to me why Memtest86+ has to be updated with the release of each new processor microarchitecture. An example of a microarchitecture would be Intel's Sandy Bridge. It's my understanding that all x86 microarchitectures implement the same basic x86 instruction set (though new instruction set extensions, such as SSE, are added overtime). As such, new x86 processors should be fully compatible with all old x86 programs. Why then does Memtest86+ refuse to run on...

  26. Testing RAM on X79 based chipset

I need to verify RAM validity on an ASUS P9X79 PRO motherboard (Sandy Bridge-E). My question is, is memtest 86+ 4.20 safe to use on this board? I have used it; it seemed to work OK (though not all 32GB showed up, only 24GB; but the BIOS showed a problem with the last 2 sticks as well (of 8 sticks in total); these symptoms may or may not be related). Hi, I downloaded the Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) (http://www.memtest.org/download/4.20/memtest86+-4.20.usb.installer.zip) and installed memtest on a 1 GB USB-stick. I let the tool format my USB-Stick with used FAT32. After booting from the stick I got an error that the kernel wasn't found. Ok, so I ran the memtest (USB version) For three hours and it wouldn't do anything but sit on 80% and not complete a single pass.... Is there something wrong if it sits like this or is it supposed to take forever like this? At a rate of 3+ hours and not a single pass for me, I can't see how some people managed 7 passes in a 8 hours time period... There is still a blinking cursor from memtest, but the keyboard doesn't respond to exit the scan so I have to shut it down by the button. ...

  29. Memtest86.com version 4

I see on Memtest86.com that they are releasing version 4 shortly (beta 2 currently available). It is apparently a major rewrite containing substantial code cleanup, large number of minor bug fixes, re-organisation of the code, and among other things 'Support for testing with multiple CPUs. All tests except for #11 (Bit Fade) have been multi-threaded. A maximum of 16 CPUs will be used for testing.' I am wondering whether a later (but soon) release of Memtest86+ will incorporate these...

This is my current screen 20mins into testing: Does this mean my CPU needs replacing and it may not be a RAM issue? Thanks, Mark (Australia)
